The Sea of Cortez, also known as the Gulf of California, is a long and narrow body of water located between the Baja California peninsula and mainland Mexico. It stretches over 700 miles from the northwestern part of Baja California to the southernmost tip of the Mexican state of Sonora. The sea covers an area of about 62,000 square miles and is considered one of the most biologically diverse seas in the world. Its waters are home to over 900 fish species, 32 marine mammal species, and five sea turtle species. The sea is a popular destination for fishing, whale watching, and snorkeling, with several small islands dotting its surface. The Sea of Cortez is named after the 16th-century Spanish conquistador Hernán Cortés, who explored its waters during his search for gold and other treasures.
